In a significant leadership shift, SafetyCulture founder Luke Anear has announced his transition from CEO to executive chairman. After 20 years at the helm of the globally recognized workplace operations platform, Anear is passing the reins to Kelly Vohs, who will officially take over as CEO on January 1, 2025.

This change marks a new chapter for SafetyCulture, which has grown from a simple workplace safety app to a comprehensive operations platform used by frontline workers across various industries worldwide.

A Planned Transition to Executive Chairman

Anear, who established SafetyCulture in 2004, will remain closely involved in the company’s vision, strategy, and collaboration with investors and the senior leadership team. Reflecting on his decision, Anear said the timing was right both personally and professionally.

“SafetyCulture is at an exciting inflection point,” Anear explained. “The U.S. is our largest market and biggest opportunity, so having a U.S.-based CEO with deep knowledge of that market will be a major advantage. I’m incredibly confident in Kelly and the leadership team’s ability to take the company forward.”

Kelly Vohs Takes the Helm

Vohs, who brings extensive experience as the former CEO of U.S.-based real estate company LivCor, expressed enthusiasm for his new role.

The company’s ambitious goals include reaching 100 million users by 2032, a target that aligns with its rapid growth trajectory.

Financial Milestones Amid Leadership Change

This leadership change comes on the heels of a successful funding round in September, where SafetyCulture raised $165 million, including $75 million in new capital and $90 million from secondary sales. Despite a slightly lower valuation of $2.5 billion compared to the previous year, Anear described the fundraising as a win in a tough market.

“We’re not overly focused on valuation dips,” Anear said. “The market fluctuates, but the business is stronger than ever.”

SafetyCulture’s recent financial performance supports this claim. The company reported a 30% revenue increase to $160.6 million last year and narrowed its losses to $36 million. However, profitability remains a long-term goal as the company continues investing in artificial intelligence, consumables, and insurance products to drive future growth.

Scaling Challenges and Future Growth

Originally launched as a workplace safety checklist app, SafetyCulture has evolved into a robust operations platform. Its tools are now used across industries like construction, manufacturing, retail, and hospitality, helping frontline workers streamline tasks and improve workplace safety.

Rapid growth has presented new challenges. Some customer accounts have scaled from 5,000 users to over 80,000 within a year, highlighting the complexity of managing a rapidly expanding user base.

“It’s a great milestone, but scaling at this pace brings operational challenges,” Anear acknowledged. “Managing thousands of users per account requires sophisticated solutions, and we’re working to address these as we grow.”

SafetyCulture has no immediate plans for an IPO, focusing instead on creating liquidity events for employees and investors. This approach allows the company greater flexibility as it continues to expand its offerings and market reach.

With investments in AI and a growing suite of tools, SafetyCulture is well-positioned to enhance workplace operations and improve the lives of millions of workers globally. Under Kelly Vohs’ leadership, the company aims to build on its momentum and reach new heights in the years to come.
